Sir Dale Kirn Knights’ Joust Report, Aerobatics Segment.Hot, definitely hot. And on Sunday, the bitey bugs were out in force. Other than that, a good time was had by all. Sadly, the attendance was pretty thin as most of the Arizona contingent, and a fair number of locals were unable to attend. The good news is that we have FIVE new judges who participated for the first time. Thanks to Bill Barber, Scott Dinger, Milton Graham Steve Harris and Joe Hildereth for being brave! The other judges were: Joel Chesler, Frank Martin, Larry Renger, Eric Rule, Lee Strickland and Stan Tyler. Tabulation and registration were provided by Alice Hildereth and Sylvia Strickland. Sally Lally pitched in as a runner, and Dennis Coleman doubled as CD and Chief Cook. Thanks to our Pit Bosses for the Aerobatics part of the contest. They were: Ray Ebert, Matt Shorey and (I think) Al Shorey. Sorry to be unsure about the third Pit Boss. Surprisingly, the major event turned out to be Expert! More entries in that than any other! The turnout was pretty thin, and we had a lot of events, so there were trophies that went un-awarded. Gloom. And the winners were:

There were special awards: Pilots’ Choice: Phil Juarez – Stiletto Best Leprechaun: Scott Dinger – Baby Flite Streak B.A.R.F. * Matt Shorey – Brodak P-40 Two pilots moved up a class at this meet. After Matt Shorey won Intermediate – again – we booted him up to Advanced. He decided to try it, since the event was the next day. As you can see, he may not stay in THAT class very long! Stan Tyler chose voluntarily to move from Advanced to Expert, and again you can see that it did him little harm. Good show, both of you guys. As far as I recall, there was only one crash, and that was only a very repairable high-speed inverted landing. You know who you are…. In addition to Aerobatics, the event included speed, carrier and scale. Perhaps the EDs of those events will download their information. |

The weather was extremely hot and humid, quite like Muncie except very little wind. Eric Conley again came down from Reno and showed everyone how it should be done. Too bad he hasn’t made it to the NATS. He and his planes would do quite well there, too. His winning flights in 15 and 36 AMA Profile were smooth, solid and without any problems. Can’t say the same for the rest of us. Dave Dawson’s Melton Guardian may now get retired – finally. He rebuilt it after I crashed it and has been flying it regularly. It is tired and needs to be put out to pasture. Two new fliers came out with their un-tested planes but elected not to enter this time. .Robert Wright had a very nice Sea Fury with an RJL 15 and Dave Hull had a Perry MO-1 Profile with a Magnum 36. Dave Hull is a noted Speed and Racing flier who showed no interest in Carrier even though he was always there to help at our contests. He somehow placed his plane in the pits without anyone noticing. I’m sure he enjoyed all the comments and guesses as to who had built it. It is one of the nicest MO-1’s EVER! We thought it must have been built by a Stunt or Scale flier because it was so nice. He got us! Welcome to the Carrier event, Robert and Dave!!! Ron Duly

Speed -- from Larry RegnerI got the results from the speed circle. And very impressive they are! Speed is run on the basis that the placings are set by the percentage of the record speed for a particular class of model. As such, a ½ A Proto Speed model has as much chance as a DynaJet. |

SCALE at the Knight’s Joust 2006The bright spot in scale at this years Knights Joust has to be our newest entry, and youngest, Lane Kilian. At seven years old he shows a natural feel for control line flying. This was he first contest and he was first in fun scale. His craft was built by his grand dad Steve, who we hope to retread for scale in the future. Steve has flown C/L for many years but it was grandson Lane that got him back out to the circles. The aircraft was a Douglas Skyraider, a la Dick Sarpoulos, with slab wing of about 30” and a Norvel 061 engine. Steve did a nice job. Not that Lane doesn’t build. In recent weeks he has built and flown a Blackhawk trainer. But not being scale he had to opt for granddad Steves Skyraider. Not to slight Sport/Profile scale. As in recent years, the low turnout has forced us to combine sport with profile scale into one event. Leo D. brought out his fabulous Yak-12. This is a high wing observation/utility plane with a 40 in it for power. He has it set up to drop leaflets, and a parachute. Only the leaflets worked on this flight. There were bugs in the electronics. But his flight was good enough flight for a win. The Knights own Ray Ebert was second with a Piper Cub J-3. Ray has been working on trimming out this craft for several weeks. It isn’t quite there but he made a good effort and we hope to see this and other scale craft from Ray on the future. John Wright was ED/judge with Joel Chesler assisting with the judging. John Wright reporting |
