A few computations will convince you that it pays to fly the lines with the least drag (rules permitting) and let the engine work fly the airplane. When rules do not give you any flexibilty, you can at least get rid of those big line connectors, use an assymmetrical aircraft and cover the lines with wing (this may be against the spirit of the rules in some events), use clean, kink-free lines and keep the length at a minimum in team racing by flying according to the rules (handle against the chest). For the speed secret of the century, invent a practical streamline enclosure for the wires. The Cd for a streamline section, even at low Rn, may be 1/3 to 1/5 of that for a circular wire of equal thickness. For two FAI regulation wires a table is given at the right showing the horsepower requited by the engine/propeller combination to pull those wires alone. |
