KOTRC Newsletter for December 2005

The big deal in November was the election of new officers. The election went rapidly in an attempt to get it past us before the massed members of the CLWOTKOTRC (control line widows of the knights of the round circle) that were present decided to become suffragettes and demand a vote.

Presidente         Dennis Coleman

Vice President     Antone Gephardt (shhhhh…)

Secretary           Larry Renger

Treasurer           Randy Heydon

Two Ex Files.  The first is an ex-EX File from October that I failed to include. The second is a new one

The Ex File from October:

As all who attended the meeting know, we have finally received our signs indicating the use of the Whittier Narrows area is limited to Control Line flying. I will purchase the mounting hardware and install the signs, as soon as I have a free moment.

The signs really look great & we owe this to the combined effort of Eric, Warren, Larry and Frank, with just a little nudging from the Ex-Files mystery writer.

As Larry reported, the repairs we performed on the field were a success and we hope to continue and complete this project before the torrential rains return to sunny Southern California.

Actually, we covered about 90% of the area and anticipate having to touch up some of the spots that may have some shrinkage. But, we can finish that another time. For now, I believe we have prevented any further crack growth and the possibility of the circle buckling.

Last week’s Hi Johnson two (2) day event was very well run and we should thank Jerry Silver and his crack team for making it such an enjoyable event. Our membership made a good showing and we came home with many of the wooden plaques that Eric produced. Perhaps, we should just have RSM give them to the Knights next time and save the effort!

EX-FILES – November 2005

As all those attending the last meeting or flying at Whittier Narrows are aware, Diane & I installed the official signs on the field. They are located at the three most visible locations; i.e. the main entrance between the two circles, the fence, next to the wash rooms and the entrance to the supplementary parking area, next to the highway.  I’m sure these will go a long way towards improving the sanctity of this area for C/L flying and is something the Parks Department has requested for a long time.

Last week I attended the latest Charles Mackey Classic & had the pleasure to renew my acquaintance with The Man himself.

Eric and Dave did a great job of running this contest, although previous social obligations prevented me from being there for the second day. Since I had the honor of judging the Classic event on Saturday, I have to indicate how impressed I was with the smoothness with which this contest was run. I hope you all had a chance to visit the Ramona Café which has a great assortment of WWI and WWII models & full scale props on display.

Of interest was the effect this location had on the air/fuel ratio of the internal combustion engines. Most of us experienced an extreme richening of the mixture. I’m sure Keith will attest to this, as well as many others. I found it was necessary to turn in my needle valve about ˝ turn. This was no doubt due to the fact that the site was approximately 4000’ higher that we usually fly at. None the less, we all had a thoroughly enjoyable time.

As we come to the end of the year, I would like to thank outgoing President, Eric for agreeing to accept that position and for doing a terrific job.

This time of the year, we are all bombarded with invitations and for the third year in a row, Northrop Grumman picked the same date as The Knights Holiday Banquet. But I could not pass up another opportunity to be with the many people who only a short time ago, introduced me to the joy (and terror) of Precision Aerobatic flying. And besides, our party is half the price.

I hope to see you all at the holiday dinner. Have an enjoyable and safe holiday season.

And now – who ya gonna listen to?

Wright Writes Right

FROM THIS MRS..

Let me tell you, those KNIGHTS, who forgot or couldn’t go to the Ramona Valley in San Diego County  for the Charles MACKEY Contest, well, they really missed out.

What a great CONTEST.  The weather was wonderful.

About the fun:  Friday at a bar/restaurant with the ex-file man and his lady and the 1 cc  guru  as well as the Mr., need I write more?  It was  CRAZY.  Really you had to be there.!

Then Saturday night, there was the Pizza Party at the house of Dave and Connie Sabon (SAN DIEGO AEROMODELERS), who really know how to live! Near the top of a mountain and overlooking the valley with horses right out their back door.  And a very sweet Mother (in-Law) next door, as well as the nicest dogs and cat one could ever want.  So much pizza and salad you could feed an army of modelers. Too much.  THANK YOU!  We really do want to come back some time if you can stand us modelers!  However if it’s too much work for the other MRS. please find a nearby restaurant for all of us—unless it’s not TOO much to do!  Now I remember Connie had helpers---Barbara Trostle (CHOLLA CHOPPERS,  AZ) and Jan Whitely (CHOLLA CHOPPERS)

The final day of the contest was also wonderful weather, even maybe a little HOT?

Our Ramona Walker, along with the Mr. Walker  was cooking up a storm out there for, yet another day ?  How do you do that Ramona?  Delicious brats and hamburgers and lots of good stuff.

Then some ladies got awards for their contributions to the contest.   There was Ramona Walker (KNIGHTS), Connie Sabon ( SAN DIEGO AEROMODELERS), Sylvia Strickland  (VALLEY CIRCLE BURNERS) and Elaine Heyworth (CHOLLA CHOPPERS) who received these awards provided  by Terri Gephardt (KNIGHTS) and Kathryn Wright (KNIGHTS).  And it’s about time, the guys can’t get ALL the awards you know!!

More KNIGHTS at the Contest:  Dennis Coleman (the President) Antone Gephardt (the Vice President)  Anne and Eric Rule (RSM DISTRIBUTION), Nancy and Ken Kaiser,  Frank and Christopher Martin, Albert Shorey, Joel Chesler, his lady, Diane,  and Larry Renger.  It was brought to the MRS. attention that this was the first contest held in San Diego County in many a moon.  If those people are that good at this contest holding their first time—it’s only going to get better as they practice! So if they have us back, be there or be SQUARE.

If I missed or misspelled any KNIGHT, please forgive—the MRS.
