Meeting Notes, 05-09-06.

Sekret Kabal Meeting: 5/9/06

Meeting held at 5:00 at Fuddruckkers on Beach and Orangethorpe as it will be from now on. Attendance was excellent with Mike Fox, John Wright, Pete Soule, Randy Heydon, Dennis Coleman, Ken Kaiser, and Larry Renger present.

Randy enquired whether he should destroy the credit card that the club’s bank sent him. The answer had already been discussed at some previous meeting and it was yes.

Mike brought up a proposal to change the format of the meeting raffle, and it was decided that it was worth bringing to the entire club’s attention.

It was discussed what remaining personnel are needed for the Joust. See the main meeting notes for further information.

It was agreed that this venue and time for the Sekret Kabal was superior to Denny’s the following Monday, and we should continue in this format.

Main Meeting: 5/9/06

No guests this week, and very thin attendance. Pete Soule suggested that he could sendout e-mail notices and the newsletter on the week prior to the meeting in order to remind people of the schedule. That was well received as a good idea.

Show and Tell:

Larry Renger – 1/2A Snapper Kit that dates from the mid ‘50s. This kit featured light wood, superb die-cutting and a great design, though very small by modern standards. It would fly well with one of the $7 Cox RTF engines. The kit was from Southwest models, which also produced the Dil-Bod racer. Larry also showed a stunt judging manual he downloaded from the PAMPA website. It was created by Dave Cook and has views of the maneuvers both as seen by the pilot and by the judges. Antone Kephart was the one who showed the item to Larry originally.

John Wright – ARC BiSlob that he picked up at T&A’s going out of business sale. He is finishing the fuselage with tissue and dope, replaced the bellcrank with a 4” SIG one, and using Polyspan to reinforce the wing. He plans on a black and yellow color scheme, using Coverlite for the wing coverings. John also brought in a Challenger powered by an old Max 35 S.

Joel Chesler – a model of his new pool changing room/tool shed and photographs of the finished building. He designed it himself and it is styled like an old gas station. Very cool! He did the drafting manually to do the design work. No CAD he!

Warren Walker - peeping through the bars

Old Business:

Joust details: We need judges, runners, tabulators, registration personnel and food. Other than that we are fine. John will ask Sally if she will help with registration, Larry will call Sylvia Strickland regarding tabulation. Ray gave Larry a list of potential judges, and Ron Duly has since said he will ED Carrier. Ray also volunteered to be a pit boss, but we need one more.

Mike Fox proposed switching to a “50/50” raffle every other month to boost the amount of cash he can spend on prizes. One month, the prize is ½ the amount of cash collected that month, the next month it is merchandise subsidized by both the previous month’s money and that from the second month.

It was moved and passed to give it a try, and the routine was instituted.

A review of the previous Sunday’s Stunt Clinic and P-40 contest was given by John Wright. Winner of the Competitor class was Stan Tyler with an ARF Flite Streak and OS .25. Joe Hildreth won the Sportsman class. As always, Keith Trostle did a marvelous job of putting on the clinic. Palmer meet review- The main winners are all listed on our website at kotrc.org.

New Business:

Joel brought up that he had been contacted by Dennis Moran regarding Kid Venture 2007, which is being put on at Whittier Narrows. Details were very confused, so John will contact Dennis and/or the SGVRCL club leaders to find out more.

A discussion was held on what kind of models we wanted to use for kid flight training. Larry to work up a design using Coroplast and carbon fiber. Warren outlined the progress on the 3 P-51s being built for the IFLOK contest. We still need a better name!!! They will be ready at least for the next Palmer meet.

The Ex Files

Last month I found myself in Tucson on business and naturally contacted our fellow club members there to say hello. It was wonderful to see some of the old guard that had made my entry into the Control Line aspect of our sport so stimulating. I must give a special thank-you to Bill and Elaine Heyworth, for their very special hospitality.

Friday evening, after visiting their beautiful home and seeing some great models, found us meeting Bob Whitely and Jan for a great dinner at the Texas Roadkill, I mean Roadhouse. Cowboy hats and guns, optional.

The next morning, since I had never been to the VSC site, Bill took me there to take part in Keith’s usual well run, judges clinic, with RJ doing the demonstration flying. After that, we went to see their impressive hobby shop and I can say I was not expecting such a large and relatively well stocked store.

Again thanks for all your nice comments regarding my 50’s Gas Station Pool House and model, at the meeting. See you all at the field.

W. JOEL CHESLER

Pete's Closing Note

The Next meeting is after the Joust. Tuesday June 13. Come on in -- we'd like to see you.
