KOTRC Newsletter for September 2006

Remember the next meet is Tuesday, 12 September coming up soon.

Meeting Notes, 08/08/06.

Sekret Kabal :: Fuddrucker's 17:00 hours:

Attendees: Pete Soule, Larry Renger, Dennis Coleman, Warren and Ramona Walker, Dave Kick and John Wright.

Pete Soule requested information on hobby sources to put in the website. Also brought up the possibility of mini-biographies of members on the website. Finally, he asked if there would be use for a computer in doing the scoring at contests.

Larry mentioned that he had spent $100 for our AMA convention booth and $40 for event insurance for the Fullerton airshow. Warren discussed having an active campaign to contact ex members to try to get them to rejoin the club.

General Meeting :: AFI Building 19:30 Hours:

Guest: Guests - Ramona Walker and Bob Worley

Show and Tell:

Warren Walker – had some engines to sell. Also he showed a Brodak Vector 40 ARC kit. He liked his ARF vector so much he bought the ARC version so he could finish it to his satisfaction. He likes the construction, 4” carbon fiber bellcrank. It has good wood, too.

John Wright – Showed his Challenger with a Max S .35 engine. He shaved down the muffler and did his own venturi insert. The model is a Bill Noyes design.

Dale Kirn – showed some never produced Cox 9x7 props and a prototype of the Cox 35 engine. Bean counted to death, it seems.

Here Dale explains why a jar of pickles is needed.

Frank Martin – had a recently acquired Sig Bearcat kit. This is a rather tiny model for Carrier competition.

Larry Renger – Showed the finished Frite Streak, which is now renamed the Sky Streak. Also had a Cub .049X which mounts the same as a Holland Wasp or Atwood Shriek. Finally, he showed that lint-pickup paper can be used to lift lettering cut from trim film and place it on a model accurately.

Gary Akers – plans for the Werwage P-47, and the Geo XL. Huge airplanes!

Old Business:

Discussion of the September 16th airshow and who is doing what toward pulling it together. John Wright is providing carrier and scale models to fly, Ken Kaiser is running the training as usual. Dave Kick and Dale Kirn to coordinate with management on the site setup and barriers for safety. We already have the insurance taken care of as mentioned in the Kabal notes.

New Business:

New business was primarily a discussion of the dates for upcoming events. This list is available on the website.

EX-FILES – August 2006

John and I decided to take a break from flying and take in the swap meet in West Covina, the other week. Both Diane and Kathy seemed to enjoy the event; in fact Diane was the recipient of a number of gifts, given gratis by the generosity of a number of the sellers. After admiring the beautiful selection of vintage speed props displayed by Fred Anderson, he offered her any one she liked. She said they reminded her of the full scale props she remembers seeing with her base commander father in South Africa. Additionally, Dave Braun told her that if she could master his beautifully crafted twirling toy, she could have one. I immediately came to her aid and actually remembered how to operate one, from my youth in Brooklyn. She did a good job and now has one to practice with. Many thanks from her, guys. If you have not taken in this event, the next one is in November and I think you will enjoy it. The items are very nostalgic, the prices are fair and the people are very friendly. See you all at the next swap meet. . JOEL CHESLER
