General Meeting :: AFI Classroom 19:30 Hours:
Guests: Kathie Wright Show and Tell:Before the show and tell starts the members gather and talk.
Dale Kirn: - An interesting prototype built for Victor Stanzel, it was a monoline, .049 powered model. The engines were to be made by Cox, the planes by Stanzel. The project died due to the risk of electrocution of kids flying near power lines. Cox planes fly on string lines, monoline has to be steel. The wing was paper laminated over balsa. The assembly was baked in a jig to set the glue and provide airfoil. Fuselage was plastic molded in an experimental injection mold. Engine was a Space Bug Junior. Dale also showed a Magnesium speed pan that Cox made

Antone Kephart - Showed some Fast Signs cut vinyl letters and numbers. They also do low tack masks for painting. Antone showed his new Ares which used the masks. The model is very nice, featuring a Fiberglass cowl and an access hatch in the rear for control adjustments.
John Wright – Showed a get well card from Rickii Pyatt. Also the Ringmaster from last month re-assembled. It has a K&B 40 on it. He brought in his finished Bislob. It is decorated in a nifty “Bee” striped décor in yellow and black. Fox .35 power, 4” bellcrank. From the spar forward it is covered in Polyspan that was painted black on the inside. Then he used Fascal covering on the rear section of the wing.John ![]()
![]() Larry Renger – New ARF Smoothie. Control Specialties pushrods and titanium ends, DuBro heavy duty clevises and ball joint links. Access hole under stab for control adjustment covered with trim monokote. Lettering for name and number hand cut and laid on using lint pickup tape. Power is a Brodak 40 with a 4.5 oz tank and 2” Brodak spinner (very pretty, but hard to keep on the plane – poor design in a couple of areas). Next, Larry showed a VA engine he has. It is peculiar in that the crankcase is split horizontally rather than the usual solid case and backplate arrangement. Timing is adjustable by screwing the piston up and down on an internal mount. Final item was a copy of Flying Models with his Sky Sport article

Old Business: Discussed the Joust. We don’t have the final numbers yet, but the contest was financially sound, especially thanks to the efforts of Warren and Ramona in the food trailer! That’s where most of the profit comes from. We had 58 competitors per day. Expert is getting crowded! Ken Kaiser suggests that all appearance judging be done en-mass, not individually. It takes WAY too long. Also the appearance judge should not be the flight judge, it should be someone who will rank the models quickly and get on with it. We only need good comparative scores, not detail analysis for the ages. It was moved to make this change, but never voted on as it is at the contest director’s discretion how to set up a contest. We need to set up so first flights are at 8:00, especially on Sunday, so the “Furriners” can get back on the road home. There was discussion about making the contest run 2 weekends, with Aerobatics the first weekend and Speed, Scale, Racing, Carrier the 2nd weekend. This will need more study New Business: Upcoming events are the Ted Goyet contest in Woodland on Aug. 18 & 19th. This will be the last one at that field as the city is taking the land back. July 14th there are swap meets in both San Diego and Covina. Larry Fernandez says that the Golden State meet needs to move, the regular field will no longer be available. He wants to know how many people would consider the longer drive to Gilroy. It is about 2 hours farther away than Clovis. We have the application forms for the AMA Convention, and it was voted to again get a booth. We again are having an RC car invasion. We still don’t have the replacement signs up, or they have been removed. There is only the one near the front gate. The other 3 gates are unmarked. |
