Steering Committee 04/12/07

– Good food, added a couple of items to the main meeting agenda

General Meeting :: AFI Classroom 19:30 Hours:

Show and Tell:

Before the show and tell big show starts the members gather and talk. Very good attendance.

Pete Soule: Russian Slingshot RTF glider. Bob Palmer’s article outlining his trip to South Africa. Raw Joust and Palmer contest photos on CD. His record book for speed contests.

Anton Kephart's dual plug Merco.

Antone Kephart: He showed a really slick ’59 Aries built from a Brodak kit. It is to the silver undercoat stage. So far, it looks like it will come in around 40 ounces. Brodak 40 power, needed a ¾” shaft extension. He did over/under cloth hinges.

The Mrs. has a two-piece ARF --- but the instructions are not that clear

John Wright: Fall-apart Ringmaster. John outlined some of the basic structural flaws in the design that tends to make that design shed wings in flight. This one lost the outboard wing just beyond the sheeting on an outside wingover exit. John also showed a monsterous “Bud Light” Laser that Walter Hicks loaned him. It has a Saito .72 for go.

John expliains the multi-part re-kitted aircraft

And then John says "I'll have a six-pack"

Warren Walker: Larkstang, an original. It uses a Randy Smith Skylark foam wing, but has his own design fuselage and tail. The fuselage is sheet over Nomex foam.

Dale Kirn: .020 powered C*x Cessna 150. He made 7 different versions in a proposal to Stanzel. Kid tested amazingly well. They could fly without help 30% of the time better than 2 line version. The project died due to the move of the plant to Minneapolis.

Eric Rule: Bellcrank of 1/8” Carbon Fiber commercial plate. It uses a “Space Age” (how long ago was that???) polymer for the bushing. He’ll be selling it for $20

Larry Renger: He got a new Dremel tool from his kids as a gift. It is a battery powered hand-held unit with the power of the line driven tools. Very ergonomic! Next were some photos from the Point Mugu airshow. Also Space Bug and Thermal Hopper engines.

Bob Werle: Enterprise Zenith kit. The wing built up, but the fuselage is 2 pieces “hollow log” construction. It is OT legal. (Also Leprechaun legal, hint, hint!)

Old Business:

Reviewed how the stunt clinic held by the Valley Circle Burners went. Pete Soule solicited help in identifying some planes from the Palmer Memorial contest. Warren Walker offered to send information.

New Business:

We discussed Lee Strickland’s proposal to unify the rules for Profile, making it “open”. There would be no engine size limit. The fuselage width rules would be retained as is. Generally the consensus was favorable. Motion was made to get a copy of Lee’s proposed rules in writing to review.

There will be the Roland Bates Profile and Classic contest on August 16 out at the Basin. Nes and all.

Much was discussed on the who, when, what for the Joust. (Since it is over, we needn’t go over the detail). And as a PS, we were routinely complimented on how well the contest went. Details at 11 (well, actually 6/12/07)
