General Meeting :: AFI Classroom 19:30 Hours:

Guest: Diane Caldwell, Dana and Dave Wall and Bob Hartman who gave the Aircraft Carrier Midway Presentation

Before the meeting:

Aircraft Carrier Midway Museum Presentation

The first order of business was a very interesting speech by Bob about the USS Midway which is now a museum in San Diego. Work on the ship began in 1943 and it took 23 months to build. Cost a whopping $85 million in those days (equivalent to nearly $3 Billion, these days). The ship saw its first combat in Vietnam.

There was a great deal of interesting detail to the talk, and it sounds like a tour of the ship would be a fantastic group outing.

Show and Tell:

George Barlow - His Corsair, mostly finished. He used Teflon guides for running the leadouts through the wing bend. Power will be a .29

Joe BrownleeJoe Brownlee – FAI F2A Speed model. Interesting technology combining a variety of modern materials and construction techniques. It uses 2 line controls. No nitro is allowed in the fuel, but speeds are up in the 180 mph region. The prop spins aroung 38 K to 40K rpm and the tip speed is about Mach .9. Very impressive numbers.

Larry Renger  Larry Renger – Photos from a trip to the factory that does Model Tech ARFs. This was in mainland China about 10 years ago. Next, a video of Andy Clancy flying a variety of his designs. The video is now in the club library. Finally, the American Boy model Larry built at the AMA Convention. Power is a Space Bug .049 dating back to the early ‘50s.

Warren Walker –.Warren Walker- Showed some of the 70 engines he purchased from the estate of an old free-flighter along with 100 or so models. Warren also showed one of his current projects, a 925 sq.in. version of the Doodle Streak. It will use a Tiger .60 or .51 for power.

Andy Borgogna – Lil’ Zilch, and old time model featuring an ignition engine. Andy built this for the upcoming VSC. It flies well, but he is still sorting out the engine run. It has a Hutcheson spark module. Weight is about 36 ounces.

Antone Kephart– An Aurora SE-5 plastic RTF which has a K&B .049 for power. The model has a 1-ounce lead radiator to make it balance! Antone also had his Fokker D-7 cloned from a SIG kit.????

Dale Kirn – with a Cox rara avis.

Free plans –

Old Business:

We discussed setup and personnel for the AMA Convention booth. It was determined that we need to set a date for the Mackey Meet

New Business:

The point system for the club was discussed. John Wright is the recorder of points.

Warren Walker is to bring in a catalog from which we can select shirts and jackets that can be silkscreened with the club Logo.

Ken Kaiser donated a partially finished Barnstormer to the club raffle.

From The Oval Office:

Happy New Year to all our members and their loved ones.

On behalf of the entire membership, I want to thank the members of the 2007 administration for all their hard work and devotion to The Knights Of The Round Circle. We are off to a great start with a very interesting first meeting; there was standing room only for the quite interesting presentation by Bob Hartman representing the Midway Museum. Diane and I had the pleasure of Bob’s company before the meeting, for dinner, and we found we shared many interests, but his discussion of the many exhibits on the Midway was really inspiring; I think he was impressed with our knowledge of the aircraft as well. I’m sure he will enjoy the club Tee Shirt I gave him as a token of appreciation.

Next month we will return to a more traditional format; in fact Eric has graciously agreed to demonstrate his fuel tank manufacturing techniques and build a tank during a technical demonstration; you will not want to miss this one. Warren will be taking orders for club shirts; so decide how many you will need and bring your check book with you.

See you all at the AMA show in Pomona this weekend.

Your President,

JOEL
